A Brief Synopsis of Christians’ United in the Word of God Church History.

In late 1979, We, The Late Emma Jean Nellar, Betty Parker and Yours Truly, Margaretta Hickman excitedly went to San Diego International Airport, picked up and Welcomed a New Young Pastor at Christians Fellowship Congregational Church on Kelton Road in San Diego, 92114, by the name of Adlai E. Mack, who was later joined by his young wife, Sandra. He was born in Detroit Michigan where he grew up, attended Princeton University in New Jersey and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts and was Officially Ordained to Christian Ministry in August of 1979 after more than ten years of Lay Ministry.

And so his Ministry began as Pastor of Christian Fellowship Congregational Church. We worshipped in the Fellowship Hall there because the Church Sanctuary had been burned down for many years and was never rebuilt.  After about three years there, Under the Leadership of Pastor Adlai E. Mack, A Beautiful Sanctuary was built with the help of the Members and their Families. Pews were donated that still have the names on them of Members long since gone are still there because  we raised funds to build that Sanctuary because of the Vision of Pastor Adlai E. Mack.  We Dedicated and Worshiped in the newly built Sanctuary the first Sunday in March of 1984. The Church grew to more than sevenfold with Standing Room Only every Sunday. Then, there became a lot of Unrest amongst the older Members of the Congregation against Pastor Mack and others in the Congregation, so much so that it was unbearable to peacefully worship there.  A few of us asked Pastor Mack to leave and we would follow him and start a new Church.  And so, with a lot of hesitation and of Course A Grief Stricken Man of God preached his last Sermon there on the 1st Sunday in September 1984.  Just six (6) months after he built and dedicated his First Church in San Diego, California. The Majority of the Membership that joined after he became Pastor there left Christian Fellowship Congregational Church that Sunday saddened but hopeful.

On September 13, 1984, We Assembled together as a small group under the Leadership of Bishop/ Pastor Adlai E. Mack at the Home of Bill and Dana McCurine not knowing to which direction our paths would lead us but we had our trust in God to direct our Paths.  On September 30, 1984, We Officially became Christians’ United in the Word of God Church with our Constitution and By-Laws and 501(c)(3) in hand. We chose for Our Church Theme Song:  We’ve Come This Far By Faith.  What a glorious day.  We worshipped at the home of the McCurines until we found our first Church home at Gompers Jr. High School Auditorium and remained there from 1984-1987. By the time we left Gompers and Moved to Oak Park Seventh Day Adventist Church in Oak Park we were more than 250 members Strong. We worshiped there from 1987 to 1993.
